Joy to the World

Joy to the World was written by an English Christian minister and writer Isaac Watts, whose sacred words were inspired by Psalm 98 of the Bible.

He published the carol as a part of his collection of hymns and spiritual songs, The Psalms of David, in 1719.

Instead of celebrating the birth of Jesus as many hymns do, this melody is all about Christ’s triumphant return.

And Watts believed that everyone, not just choirs and professional singers, should be able to celebrate Christ’s return with a joyful noise. With the line, ‘And heaven and nature sing’. Watts encourages all to sing His praises.

Today, the carol is so popular, as of the late 20th century, it was the most-published Christmas hymn in North America and the carol is usually sung to an 1848 arrangement by the American composer Lowell Mason.

Lyrics: Joy to the World

Joy to the world! the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the world! the Saviour reigns;
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.
